For our last game of the season we travelled to Hadlow.
As ever increasing numbers of us arrived at the ground, it appeared something was amiss. Of the fourteen brave souls, it transpired that Skinner, Tank and Slevin had actually agreed to play for the opposition, who were short of players. Treachery of the highest order.
Jamie Baker had stepped up to captain the side.
The pitch was rather green and damp after some heavy rain, but we got on with it and it was lovely to have a game.
Baker won the toss and wisely bowled.
Damps on a damp pitch was too good for the oppo. He clean bowled their Chairman with a beauty that pitched on middle and clipped the top of off stump. He was to finish with scandalously good figures of 6-2-4-10.
That brought “Snake No 1” to the wicket, aka Tanky. Popular as Tank is, Westy showed him no mercy and sent him back the pavilion for 2 after a good caught and bowled. Jacob’s figures were 5-1-1-13
Damps did for two more batsmen and at 20 for 4, ”Snake No 2” waddled out to the wicket in the shape our disloyal captain Skinner. He showed his attacking intent with several extravagant leaves.
With two more wickets, Hadlow looked in real trouble at 30 for 6. However their captain joined Skinner and played some powerful shots.
Damps and West were replaced by Trott and Baker. Trott bowled a fuller length than previously and got good turn. 5-1-1-23. His wicket came via a catch by Klimcke, who owed us one, having put two down previously.
Baker couldn’t find a way through the turgid defence of Skinner, and Klimcke got a few overs. He couldn’t though repeat his bowling feats of last week.
Jamie’s figures were an impressive 7-1-0-21
Charitha Palipane was back after a long holiday and bowled well. He clean bowled their skipper.
The opposition ended on 111 for 7 off their 30 overs.
Skinner was unbeaten on 27. He would have had a few more but some slightly dodgy scoring was seemingly done to allow the Hadlow skipper to get his first 50!
Tom Gagg and Tim Lush opened up. It wasn’t easy getting runs on a sticky track and slow outfield but Gagg looked in fine form. He fell for 8 to an excellent catch in the covers.
Snake No 3 (Slevin) was the pick of the bowlers for Hadlow. He conceded only 13 runs off his five overs.
Harry’s Dad had driven to watch him play. Unfortunately the dummkopf Harry had not mentioned it was an away game, so he ended up watching the 2s on the Green.
Skinner was keeping wicket for Hadlow and had challenged Petty to a “fewest byes” contest. Petty won that comfortably, and was later seen drinking his prize. Fortunately Hadlow sold non alcoholic cider, if the Welfare Officer is reading this.
Klimcke was in at 3 and started with a big 6 over cow corner.
Lush kept him company and the pair progressed smoothly showing fine techniques.
During the drinks break though, Lush was seen disappearing into the gents with some talcum powder, a credit card and a rolled up £50 note.
5 minutes later he was a different bat, bouncing around, giggling and started launching extravagant shots.
Klimcke reached an excellent 50 and was persuaded by Skinner that he had actually pulled his hamstring and to retire hurt. That allowed Keagan Luke, on debut, to show some good technique accompanying Lush, who hit the winning runs and finished on 36.
A good win against a nice bunch. A lot of fun was had and we then headed back to the Green for some extensive rehydration.
It’s been a good season with many successes and a lot of laughs.
Thanks to all who have taken part in it. Love you all.
Up the Mighty 3s.
