Fielding errors cost Bearsted

Playing their first mid week match of the season Bearsted took on an unbeaten Sissinghurst side who were responsible for their only league defeat last season. Due to previously postponed matches it was a league and cup quarter final double header so a lot was at stake.

Bowling first under captain Leo Petty, Bearsted produced one of their most disciplined bowling performances of the season yet with only 6 wides and zero no balls during the whole 20 overs. At the half way stage they had restricted Sissinghurst to just 231-5 but the second half of the innings was unfortunately a different story as sloppy fielding in the deep and constant overthrows gave away the initiative. Ending on 306-8 the Sissinghurst score was at least 30 runs more than it should have been. Wickets were shared out with three for Henry on his hardball debut, two for Joe, and one each for Rob and Louis. Leo took a great stumping off Joe's bowling and was a constant thorn in the batsmen side looking for run outs.

Knowing they had let Sissinghurst off the hook with their poor fielding, Bearsted got off to a solid start with Alex and Henry always looking to steal extra runs. Runs dried up completely for Drew and Tom who found it hard to get the ball away and lost 3 wickets. The French brothers got the innings back on track with Louis hitting the bowlers with real aggression. At the half way stage Bearsted seemed on track for a stunning victory at 230-5, but they couldn't maintain the momentum through Joe and Luke. The last pair of Leo and Drew (batting again due to an injury to Rob) came in needing 54 from 24 balls. Despite adding 18 runs it was too much of a task in the face of great bowling by Sissinghurst's Kent fast bowler, ending on 270-11.

Man of the match was Louis French for a great overall performance top scoring with 16, taking 2 smart catches and a wicket which was the least his bowling deserved.

Bearsted move to their next match knowing they need to sharpen their fielding which had previously been a key strength. They competed with the best team they will face for large parts of the match and their challenge now is to maintain that for 20 overs.
