A late change in the fixture meant the glorious 3rd XI travelled away to Mote to play their 3s. A shorter journey for many than to our home ground.
After some discussions Mote batted first. The pitch had been covered but did not look overly prepared and was in need of a trip to the barbers for a short back and sides.
Max Patton (7-1-23-1) opened the bowling and started well. He got some lateral movement and made use of the inconsistent bounce. His wicket came courtesy of a catch by his Dad. Although in order to make sure Max does not take things for granted, Dave decided to juggle the ball first up.
Euan Coveney opened from the other end. He started with a rank full toss which which was sharply despatched to Marcel Boonaert who was making his debut for the 3s. Unfortunately the ball went straight through his hands, but frankly the ball did not deserve a wicket so it may have been a moral judgment on his part. Coveney bowled well (after some initial buggeration with spin bowling) and finished his two spells with figures of 8-1-56-3. He accounted for the better opener and two late big hitters. One was courtesy of a fine catch in the deep by our substitute fielder Ollie Patton.
Flynn Armstrong replaced Max and looked sharp. It wasn’t a quick wicket but the ball was hitting Leo Petty’s gloves with some force. He took an easy caught and bowled for one of his wickets when the batsman struggled with the pace. Which raised the question why Armstrong hadn’t gone for a caught and bowled the previous over when the ball looped gently over him and landed near the stumps. Coveney took a good catch off him and he returned at the death to force their No 8 to play on. He had impressive figures of 4.2-1-15-3.
Rob Maughan came on and bowled some quality spin. He has a lovely smooth action. His 6 overs went for only twenty runs at a time when Mote were hitting out.
Boonaert came on next from the top end. He hits the seam and generates a decent pace. He’s also blessedly less excitable than many of his compatriots. His figures were 5-0-27-2. His first wicket was a big looping attempted drive that went into the off side. Flynn at extra cover called loudly for it and looked settled under the ball. Max Patton at mid off then decided at the last minute to call his own name. Fortunately the seemingly inevitable collision did not happen and Patton held onto it. He was later seen declaiming that he had not heard Flynn’s call. He is accordingly having the wax removed from his ears on Monday. Marcel’s second wicket was through a fine catch by Leo Petty behind the stumps.
Rameez Raja, also on debut for the 3s, came on to bowl. He has good dip in his delivery and gets lots of turn. However when bowling to a left/hand right hand combination he needs to stop getting hit for singles when his aged skipper was at long on and had the job of repeatedly moving the darned sight screen. Raja accounted for the Mote No 4 who had hit a good 62 before being caught by Maughan. His bowling figures were 5-0-35-1. He was unlucky Guttsy could not hold onto a tough chance at long off.
Matt Klimcke bowled three overs having reinvented himself as a spinner, conceding 38 runs.
Armstrong cleaned out the final man in the penultimate over and we had bowled them out for 229. A really good performance against a strong side
After the interval Klimcke and Petty opened up. Hall for Mote looked sharp and did not give much away. He accounted for Klimcke who departed for a rare duck.
Guttsy was in at 3 and looked calm. The pair worked well until Petty was bowled for 13.
Armstrong was in at 4 and batted showing a good technique. He had cut out the slogs across the line and will surely go on to score many runs in his career. He fell though to a good catch for 4.
Coveney batted well but was overly concerned about missing the Man U game on the TV and unsuccessfully tried a reverse sweep. Quite why he wanted to watch them is not clear. They lost to Spurs, who are rubbish.
Rob Maughan was next in.
Guttsy had hit a good 37 before being bowled.
Rob Maughan was caught and bowled for 3.
Patton senior looked in good form and progressed smoothly to 14 before suddenly playing across the line and being out lbw for 14.
Boonaert was in at no 8 and can clearly hold a bat. He hit some powerful shots.
Raja missed a straight one and was plumb in front for a duck.
Max Patton was caught, without scoring, off their excellent spinner who turned the ball sharply in both directions.
By agreeement Mote bought on their ten year old spinner who looks a real prospect, bowling Chinamen.
The captain was last in and looked like a man happy to play for his average. Boonaert finally holed out to the youngster for a fine 32. Skinner was unbeaten on 3. We were all out for 128. A comfortable loss but not a disgraceful one.
