By Dan Skinner

Linton Park 3s were welcomed to Hollingbourne, after an earlier away fixture had proved a close match. An unusually strong week of availability meant we had 6 players who could not get a game. By agreement with Linton we played 12 a side.
With the forecast looking pretty dreadful, a conclusion to the match seemed unlikely. Linton declined the suggestion of a T20 and wanted 35 overs each.
Our skipper, Dan Skinner, won the toss. In the light of the predicted rain, he chose to bowl in order to get as many people a game as possible.
Ben Lush opened the bowling down the slope and was straight into a good rhythm. He hit the track hard and got some movement
Linton were playing their shots. They might have scored more except for one opener seemingly having borrowed someone else’s kit (“a la mode Klimcke”, as they say on the Parisian catwalks) and having to hitch up his trousers each time he ran.
Jamie Baker bowled up the slope but at least the wind, and impending dark clouds, were at his back. His first over was a bit loose but he tightened up and only conceded four runs off his next three overs, finishing with figures of 4-1-12-1. He had their number three well caught by Angus Kenny. He was also unlucky not to get another wicket when the noise of a fine edge to keeper Petty was not picked up by the umpire.
Petty kept well, but in display of bravado and machismo, he twice eschewed the use of his gloves and decided to stop the ball with his sternum.
Lush’s first wicket came after the young opener stepped across and missed a straight one. His second wicket was the other opener who played down the wrong line and was also clean bowled. His excellent spell resulted in figures of 5-0-10-2
He almost had another, when Angus Kenny couldn’t quite hold onto a sharp chance at gully.
Kenny himself then replaced Jamie Baker. He has a tall wristy action that results in some great deliveries. He conceded only 9 in his three overs.
Isaac Marriner came down the slope in place of Ben Lush. He seemed to start each over with a terrible delivery but then found his rhythm. His left arm over will cause many right handed batsman problems over the years. One delivery in his second over was a beauty and took the top of off stump. His figures were 3-1-6-1.
Max Patton bowled a good over up the slope conceding only 5 runs.
We fielded pretty well, with our useful blend of experience and youth. Three throws in hit the stumps.
With the rain coming down pretty consistently there had been various discussions about whether to carry on.
The sight of Euan Coveney about to come onto bowl and marking out his run seemed to galvanise the team into action and they all just ran off the field for the safety of the pavilion. Linton were 47 for 4 off 16 overs. Young Euan was left at the start of his run, waiting forlornly for the rain to stop and his team mates to return. He was still stood there some hours later as the ground was locked up.
