Bearsted suffer narrow defeat in the rain.

On a cold and gloomy Saturday morning Bearsted Under 11's took on the mighty Linton.

Unfortunately due to the overnight rain and the threat of more, the game was moved off the main pitch and onto the outfield. The result was the game was played on the smallest pitch seen in any Under 11 match, with a short wicket and even shorter boundaries.

Bearsted captain for the day, Leo Petty, won the toss and put Linton into bat. Fielding a team of mixed experience Bearsted's bowling suffered as the first Linton pair took their score to 241 for no loss. This continued as the second Linton pair added another 33 runs. The scoring slowed with the third pair adding only 17 with Luca Callender claiming Bearsted's first and only wicket. But runs continued with the last pair pushing the score to 319-1. Generally the bowling was too wayward with extras accounting for 48 runs, and too many leg side bowls punished with the Linton batsman making the most off the short boundaries. The stand out bowlers were Luca (2-8-1), Rob Maughan (2-9-0) and young Haydn Emsley (2-11-0).

After a very quick turn around Bearsted started to chase down the target of 320. The first pair (Luca and Tom "the scotch egg" Doulton) got things off to a flying start adding 32 runs including a huge six from Luca Callender. Things continued in the same vain as the second pair of Rob and Haydn added another 30 runs highlighted with another maximum this time by Rob Maughan with a beautifully timed leg side flick and a boundary from Haydn. As the third pair of Rory and Joe looked to push on the heavens opened forcing both players and parents to seek shelter. After a short break play resumed and almost immediately Linton claimed their first wicket as one of their youngest players cleaned bowled Joe. Needing 42 from their 4 overs the final pair of Leo and Max Patton started positively with Leo hitting two classic drive boundaries. However just as it seemed they were about to pull off a great win Leo was bowled seemingly unable to defend his wicket with his bat stuck in the mud! That wicket sounded the end of their chances and they eventually finished on 305-2 just 15 runs short.

Although defeated the Bearsted players never gave up and continued to encourage each other even when they were wet and cold. Lessons were learnt and more hard work is needed at training as yet again all their good work was undone by bowling characterised by too many extras and easy boundaries from leg side deliveries.
