Under the hot early June sun, the Sunday team skipper elected to bat having won an actual toss for the first time in many years. After a good 40 run partnership, Piers was the first to fall but then Mark (58) and Yannick (51) both hit half centuries before Mark’s wicket once again sparked a middle order collapse. This was not helped by some dreadful running from the captain, first running out Simon before chipping an easy chance to mid off, which was dropped, to bring up his 50 and then running himself out the following over. Steve Benjamin hit a speedy 35 to put the score over 200, eventually finishing 223-8.
A tea not made by the captain was enjoyed by all and the High Halstow batsmen set about in their attempt to chase down the target. Some good early bowling from Lewis and Harry meant they were always falling behind the rate before Steve and Mark came on to take the wickets of 5 of their top 6. Some inspired fielding from the returning Dan Dawson stopped what was looking like a promising innings from the young High Halstow number 3, who had earlier put in a fine performance with the ball. Harry came back on only to be rushed to A&E moments later as he attempted to catch a fiercely struck drive with his elbow. Even with a few big hits late on, High Halstow were eventually bowled out 50 runs short for 173 making it 2 wins in a row for the Sunday team.
Next week: Away at Pluckley. Spooooooky.
